The burden of neurological diseases is greatest in Africa. There are many more people with cerebral palsy, stroke, paralysis, epilepsy, and other neurological diseases than in any other part of the world. With an estimated lifetime epilepsy prevalence of 2 out of every 100 individuals, there are over 28 million people with epilepsy in the region and children are the most affected.
Every month, Ubuntu Neurology and Afya Research Africa has an outreach clinic at Uhai Neema Hospital in Ruaraka to enhance access to care for communities in Nairobi. During these clinics, services offered include subsidized clinical reviews, electroencephalography, and transcranial Doppler ultrasound for children with sickle cell disease.
The initiative also facilitates access to fairly priced medicines from pharmaceutical companies. In cases where preferred medicines are unavailable within the country, efforts are made to facilitate access by submitting applications to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
subsidized care is provided for select patients referred by clinicians across the country, with tens of patients benefiting from this program.
