London-based YouTube channel, The Ubunifu Space have officially announced an African tour (#UBUONTOUR) to South Africa & Kenya this coming November - December. Made up of two teams in London and Nairobi, the channel has amassed a loyal following of nearly 200 000 subscribers and close to 30 million views on their YouTube channel, along with over 50 000 followers across all social media platforms thanks to their relatable reactions to the biggest songs and artists in Africa and Africans in the diaspora since 2017.
With aims to help build and create links for Africans from Africa and outside the continent, Bryan (Kenya), Monique (Zimbabwe/Cameroon), David (Ghana), Sade (Nigeria) and Ian (Uganda) will spend time meeting with creatives, visiting local historic and cultural landmarks and establishing lasting connections with their locally based online community.
"Music has obviously been a great export of Africa in the past, but there is so much more coming out from young creatives on the continent, and we would love to showcase the work to the UK, and the world" they say.
Visiting Kenya from 12th December - 18th December 2019, the UK-based team of five are excited to connect with their Kenyan subscribers in Nairobi through appearances and events to be announced closer to their arrival.
ABOUT THE UBUNIFU SPACE
A digital space by Africans, for Africans where we showcase and share the different sounds & creative arts of young Africans from within the continent and the diaspora. We also aim to help build and create links for Africans from across the continent and the world to come connect, share and create new ideas.
Bryan:
Bry or Bryan (major key 'Bryan' with a 'Y') is the founder of The Ubunifu Space. A Kenyan, but born and raised in South London all his life, Bryan has a deep love for music of most genre's. Bryan is also a great football lover, who is also not bad when comes to playing on the pitch.
Monique:
Monique Touko is a London based multidisciplinary artist working in both theatre and film. She is a theatre director, her most recent show was Noughts and Crosses at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and a reading of This Might Not Be It by Sophia Chetin-Leuner at Bush Theatre. Monique's skill set includes script reading, facilitation, devising, international work, new writing, training actors and working with young people.
Monique is also a producer, videographer and also events coordinator.
David:
David also known as 'Davey' is a member of The Ubunifu Space. His heritage is Ghanaian and Lebanese but was born and raised in South London, UK. Passionate about the expression of visual creativity and music, he is a Digital Producer and a Multifaceted artist. Whether it be capturing artists, designing or directing - he is always up for the challenge. David is a huge football fan and enjoys combat sport such as boxing and MMA whilst being heavily active in health & fitness!
Ian:
Ian Opolot is of Ugandan origin, and currently resides in London, UK. He is a member of The Ubunifu Space and is also writer who multidisciplines in poetry and prose, including think pieces and reviews within the art form of film and theatre. Ian also partakes in 35mm photography, focusing on landscapes, street scenes and candids during events/gatherings and everyday life. All of which fall under the umbrella of the human experience. Ian is also enthusiastic about music, and its ability to capture cultural movements, ways of life and elicit emotions that make you feel good. As a profession, Ian works as a Town Planner, working with architects/agents to deliver housing, small changes to dwellings and changes to the use of premises.
Shay:
Shay Sade is a presenter and DJ on London based radio station Reprezent Radio showcasing sounds from around the globe . When she's not on the air, Shay is 1/6 of creative platform the Ubunifu Space. Throughout this she also works in branding for Nike and is a swimming enthusiast
