Kenyan boarding schools are the prison camps where some of your best and worst memories of childhood were made. Having to deal with roaring pubescent emotions and monstrous mood swings, crushes, the never ending ravenous hunger and those awful paraffin laced meals, and you have the sugar, spice and everything nice needed to curate a typical Kenyan high school experience.
Opening week was particularly hectic. Not only were you in the rush to cram 4 weeks worth of holiday assignments in two days, you also had to deal with the scrutiny of your parents as they went through your boarding school shopping list, trimming it down to the bare essentials.
