Jose Emilio was finally able to divorce Rebecca after finding out about her affair with his cousin, Misael. He was very upset because Rebecca confessed that the child she had been expecting belonged to Misael and they had been seeing each other even before their marriage. Jose Emilio felt betrayed because he had ended his marriage to Angelli, the woman he really loved, because of Rebecca's pregnancy. When he tried to get back together with Angelli, it was too late because she was already engaged to Renato.

Jose Emilio did not give up until the last moment and went to see Angelli on her wedding day. He asked her to call off the wedding so that they could be together but Angelli refused. She said that she wanted to move on with her life, just like he had with Rebecca. Jose Emilio was deeply hurt and went away with the missionaries to nurse his broke heart.

Renato was worried that Angelli would not show up to their wedding but Sebastian assured him that she would come.  Angelli did go to the wedding but hesitated when the priest read the vows. In the end, Renato called off the wedding since he had realized that Angelli did not love him. He told her that Jose Emilio was the one who saved her during the fire she was caught in and he had stayed married to Rebecca because he wanted to protect her. Rebecca had threatened to file charges against Angelli if Jose Emilio divorced her. With this information, Angelli set out to find Jose Emilio for a chance to rekindle their love.
