Locally, Rafiki made history by being the first Kenyan film to screen at Cannes. It caused quite a stir after its director, Wanuri Kahiu challenged a court order initiated by KFCB, banning its theatrical release in local cinemas because of the film's lesbian themes. A ruling by the High Court lifted the ban for a week subsequently allowing cinemas to screen it in order for Rafiki to qualify as Kenya's submission for the Oscars Foreign Film Category.
Rafiki was the 4th highest grossing movie of 2018 in terms of tickets sold via KenyaBuzz. It was a good year for superhero films which raked in the most in ticket sales. Globally, Sanju beat Padmavaat in box office earnings for Bollywood movies. Locally, it was vice versa, making Padmavaat the second best performing Bollywood film after Race 3.
