Kenya's fashion industry is not without its issues — in the age of fast fashion, we are among the top five importers of used clothes worldwide which contributes significantly to landfills in Kenya.
However, there is plenty of promise too as more and more brands take an interest in sustainable fashion.
Labels such as AfroWema celebrate local craftsmanship through upcycling and crafting timeless, quality pieces that can be worn for years.
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Kibera, Nairobi, AfroWema Workshops stands as a beacon of sustainable fashion, weaving together culture, creativity, and conservation. Founded in 2021 by Tatiana Teixeira, a biologist with a passion for multidisciplinary solutions, the brand is on a mission to contribute to the conservation and development of the planet in a more sustainable way. Afro Wema Workshops not only embraces the rich cultural tapestry of Kenya but also fosters a community-driven approach to fashion.
Handmade in Kenya, AfroWema Workshops prides itself on crafting original clothes and accessories using a variety of materials, including Kitenge, Denim, and Brass. What sets the brand apart is its commitment to upcycling, breathing new life into materials to create unique, sustainable pieces. The tagline, "Save the Planet with Style," encapsulates the essence of Afro Wema's philosophy, emphasizing the fusion of fashion and environmental responsibility.

Teixeira, the visionary behind AfroWema Workshops, is a biologist with a profound understanding of the interconnectedness of various domains of biology. Early on, she recognized the potential for a more profound contribution to conservation through a multidisciplinary approach. Sustainable fashion emerged as a logical choice, and Afro Wema was born. Tatiana collaborates closely with local artisans, primarily empowering women to showcase their skills and creativity.
"Community is a very big part of AfroWema." Tatiana tells KenyaBuzz. In its collaboration with local artisans, AfroWema brings to life the brand's vision of sustainable fashion. One such artisan is Grace, an exceptionally skilled seamstress, whose craftsmanship adorned Sauti Sol's outfits for their final Sol Fest performance in December 2023. This collaboration not only showcases the brand's commitment to quality but also underscores its place in the vibrant cultural scene of Nairobi.
In a testament to AfroWema's versatility, the brand has extended its reach beyond Kenya, creating designs for the Uganda-based dancing group "Ghetto Kids." This cross-border collaboration underscores Afro Wema's commitment to cultural exchange and its aspiration to contribute positively on a global scale.
Afro Wema's sustainable approach is also reflected in remuneration of artisans. "A huge percentage of proceeds from our brand goes back to the community but I don't treat this as just another charity project. We are big on quality and that's why all our artisans are paid upfront when commissioned" Tatiana Says.
Within AfroWema's vibrant community, I had the pleasure of meeting Glory Manca who is currently undergoing her fashion internship at the workshops. As she hones her skills under the creative direction of Tatiana, Glory is set to debut her first major showcase at Tribal Chic 2024 under the Afro Wema brand adding a dynamic and fresh perspective to the brand's commitment to nurturing local talent.
A visit to AfroWema Workshops is a journey into the heart of sustainable fashion, where style meets responsibility. Tatiana's commitment to a more sustainable planet, combined with the talent of local artisans, results in a brand that not only creates beautiful, original pieces but also contributes to the well-being of both the environment and the community.
