Star Profile: Matthew Perry

31 May 2013 | By Andrew Onyango

Everybody’s favorite “Friend” Matthew Perry, or as known for ten years, Chandler Bing is still alive, well and on television. The Friends star shocked fans in the late 90’s when confirmation of his drug addiction came up. Even while playing Chandler, Perry was dealing with very serious drug addiction problems. In a recent ABC interview, he stated that he was “good at hiding it” and in the end it was the will to live which made him snap out of it. Perry is a champion for drug addiction assistance programs. But his meltdown was not as epic as Charlie Sheen’s. His was better masked by the charm of his on screen personas combined with his private lifestyle. With Perry when he was on TV you knew he was there but not very many people even cared to read the gossip columns surrounding his personal life.

Perry has been on television since the 80’s and even made appearances in Growing Pains and Beverly Hills 90210. But his big break came in 1993 when he was selected to be one of six friends in a sitcom about their daily lives. The show was originally called Six of One but after some well-deserved rethinking it became “Friends”. During the show’s reign on the top of the sitcom world, Perry made the big screen jump by starring opposite Salma Hayek in Fools Rush In followed by a team up with Bruce Willis for The Whole Nine and Ten Yards movies.

Following Friends’ conclusion, he’s been on The West Wing, The Good Wife and starred as Zack Efron’s older counterpart in 24 Again. But in 2012, he joined his on screen wife Courtney Cox in becoming the second Friends star to have his own show non-related to Friends (Joey doesn’t count). However reports have come in that ABC has pulled the plug on Go On after one season. A ludacris decision if you ask me. But we eagerly await the voices of the American audience to undo this madness.

Spotted In: Friends, The Whole Nine Yards, The Whole Ten Yards, Fools Rush In, Ally McBeal, The Good Wife, The West Wing
