The Spanish national team yesternight made a historic comeback into the global international football world after 11 years. The Spaniards edged out Luka Modric's Croatia on penalties. The Croatians missed out on their first international trophy to Spain in the least expected way as they are known to be good on matter penalties.
Real Madrid fullback, Dani Carvajal chipped in a Panenka penalty to seal Spain's 5-4 win on spot kicks after goalkeeper Unai Simon had saved Bruno Petrovic's effort.
The final which took place in Rotterdam was one to watch as the game finished in a goalless draw after extra time with no either team ready to let the title slide.
Spain could have won the title a spot kick earlier but Manchester City's Aymeric Laporte blasted his penalty wide. It did matter however as Unai Simon continued with his heroics and saved the subsequent spot kick allowing Carvajal to be the hero of the night.
"For us it was a unique opportunity, we went out early in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and today we had to take advantage at all cost," Carvajal told Spanish broadcaster TVE.
On the other side, it was tears on Luka Modric's side as this was the only opportunity to top off his stellar career with a piece of international trophy for him and his nation only for his dream to be thrashed by his Club teammate Dani Carvajal.
Modric who was making his 116th international appearance has led his side up to the final of the 2018 World cup and third place in the 2022 World cup and they were desperate to go a step further and win this final.
