If you have never been to France, this is the best way to travel there. Riviera is a short miniseries about a woman whose life is turned upside down after her wealthy husband dies in a yacht explosion. All the riches and glamour that surround her mask the deception that built them.
In the first episode, we are taken to a high stakes auction of a piece of painting that's going for millions (of dollars, not cupcakes). Georgina (played by Julia Stiles), the female protagonist, is debating with her soon-to-be-dead husband on a call on whether to raise the stakes but the billionaire businessman is distracted by something else. A tragedy happens and the dramatic events start unfolding, with Georgina at the centre of the wealthy French family woes. Georgina loves her husband and we are made to believe he does too. It turns out Georgina is the second wife to Constantine (played by Dimitri Leonidas) and the first family won't just hand over their birthright without a fight.

The backdrop of the story is quite interesting. Art is not explored as much but this series will make you appreciate the work and depth of artists. The story also progresses fast and you can already see possible conflicts before they happen. Constantine's first wife Irina Atman (played by Lena Olin) slays in her character. She's smart, sensual and will do whatever it takes to protect her family. She feels a little like the female Don Draper with her cigar and chilled persona. Iwan Rheon, whom you've seen in Game of Thrones, will also turn out to be the dark horse you didn't expect which is a welcome surprise. The relationship with Georgina and her male friend Robert Carver reminds us that we can thrive in platonic relationships as well. We shouldn't always be worried about the friend zone.
Just like any typical family drama series, there are several stereotypes that you expect and this one is no different. The Russians are the thugs, Constantine has an appetite for clandestine affairs and the kids are spoilt and lacking in ambition despite their father's success. The show also lacks in even mundane humour which makes the show a bit too dark.
The storyline is convincing and you will want to find out the truth about Constantine's murder. The ending is a little meh and you will not be entirely satisfied. 3/5 stars for me.
