This series made me learn Russian words like, 'het' (pronounced as 'net') which means no! And in this case, Mc Mafia was a bit of a 'het' for me. The series is a British crime drama show based on a book. The show follows a Russian crime family that was exiled to Britain and focuses mostly on their English-raised son Alex Godman (played by James Norton) who wants to cut off his Russian roots and create a 'clean image' for himself. Fate, however, has something else far darker in store for him.
In the first episode, we are introduced to Alex Godman who is a successful financial analyst and his lovely girlfriend, Rebecca. The Godman's are a wealthy Russian family seen by the splendour that surrounds them. We see them at a soiree where Alex's dad looks tired and makes fun of Rebecca (played by Juliet Rylance) who doesn't speak Russian, much to Alex and his mother's disdain. Their sister is the typical hipster party-rocker who is dating a young man who loves her more than she does. We then have Uncle Boris (played by David Dencik) whose actions open a can of worms that lead to Alex's downward spiral.

You will get to understand on a greater level how crime syndicates operate, as seen by the talk of the counterfeit business of clothes and perfumes, how money laundering works for unscrupulous businesspeople and the role police play in aiding these extra-legal trades. You will also love the beautiful city of Prague, beautiful beaches and the charm of Semiyon Kleiman (played by David Strathairn). Other performances that are also convincing are that of Rebecca and Antonio (played by Caio Blat). The dialogues are also interesting with one guy storming into another's house. The victim says, "Please leave my house" and the invader asks sarcastically, "Is that how you speak to an intruder?"
The problem with this series is that it needs lessons from James Bond. There are too few car-chases, no shootouts, no dramatic press exposes, very few climatic deaths or kidnaps…they can do way better. These are Russian and Eastern European criminal cartels that mask themselves as sophisticated people so we'd expect their lives to be exciting and dramatic but not boring. Ugh. That is one major let down.
