Comedy in Kenya used to be male-dominated craft. Over the past year though, national clamor for female comedians has suddenly skyrocketed — thanks in no small part to paradigm-shifting female-led Youtube & Instagram shows that blew up at the height of the quarantine period.
Of course, we knew women were funny well before that. But somehow, it took a pandemic to bring them to the fore. Here's a round up of rib cracking Kenyan comediennes to tickle your fancy
Mammito
You may know her from the Churchill Show, but comedian Mammito is a star in her own right. Perhaps the most followed female comedian on the continent! She's really made a name for herself with her POV skits that are relatable to the masses.
Cartoon
If you want to learn new sheng words and indulge in some unhinged street humor, Cartoon is your girl! Caveat for sensitive people: Her comedy is a bit abrasive.
BrendaJons
Activist and comedienne Brenda also known as "Mama Kingston" is famous for her hilarious family centered skits and Kikuyu spoofs.
Zeddy
You know how taarab songs give a POV of swahili culture? Zeddy does that using comedy.
Teacher Wanjiku
Since she left the Churchill show, her style of comedy has really evolved. Her skits with Mammito are hilarious!
