Wow, guys! A movie has never been so funny, witty, full of puns, and deep all at once. Inside Out 2 strikes the perfect balance, appealing to both its target audience, adolescents, and adults who reminisce about their teenage years. It effortlessly captures the emotional chaos we all experience, from puberty to adulthood, while introducing new emotions that shape our behavior. From puberty to adulthood, the movie portrays the emotional chaos we all go through, adding new feelings that influence our actions.
The animation was amazing, just as good as the first film. The movie's message, that all emotions are necessary to create a balance in our lives, is delivered in a way that feels conclusive and satisfying. Watching Joy, Riley's first and most dominant emotion, break down into sadness was heartbreaking. Joy, who has always been the micromanager to keep Riley on a "good" path, feared that the newer emotions were taking over her personality, which hit close to home for me and had my tears gushing. This moment was also key to the story's message as Joy learned to allow herself to feel her difficult emotions rather than suppressing them.
What I loved about this sequel was how we saw more of each emotion's true personality compared to the first film. While the first movie largely revolved around Joy and Sadness, this sequel expands on all the emotions, showing their complexities in ways that feel refreshingly honest. Anxiety as the jittery protector, represents the fear of change negatively affecting a person and the uncertainties that come with growing up as expressed by Riley who faced a variety of new challenges. On the other hand, Envy makes subtle appearances, pointing out the dangers of comparison and how it can affect our sense of self-worth, feeding into Riley's insecurities.
By the end, the film teaches us that these uncomfortable emotions are just as vital as the joyful ones, as long as one learns to control them rather than suppress them or allow one to significantly dominate over another, making it a smart and relatable sequel for audiences of various ages.
This movie has been in theatres for a few weeks already so will be leaving soon. If you haven't had a chance to take the kids yet, don't miss this gem.
