Want to raise a whiz kid but worried your kids aren't getting exposed to enough tech at school? Don't fret, KenyaBuzz has you covered. We're always looking for opportunities to help you raise your kids, including your little computer geniuses-to-be.
Why do kids need tech skills? We're living in the most exciting age of technology. Our lives are becoming more and more intertwined with computers, so much so that it's a wonder how we even survived day-to-day in our not too distant analogue past. Every day there's something new to get excited about - just think, drone taxis are being tested and could be filling our skies as early as 2020! The speed of growth in the tech industry could make your head spin.
And it's not going to end anytime in the foreseeable future. The jobs of the future are going to continue to be in tech. But how competitive are Kenyan kids in competing for the world's top jobs?
Forward-looking countries have included computing in their school curriculums to give their kids an early competitive edge. For example, students in China learn coding in preschool, which is also the same stage they are learning basic math and Chinese. In the UK, coding, design and robotics classes are mandatory for students between the ages of 5 and 16.
While Kenya hasn't yet integrated coding into its schools, there are a growing number of private camps and classes introducing coding and programming to kids at a young age. They employ fun, interactive and innovative methodologies to get kids involved in and excited about computers and programming. The camps will bring your kids' imagination to life by teaching them to create basic programs, video games, animated stories and more. Not to mention all the other cool skills they'll gain along the way like logical and creative thinking, problem solving and persistence.
If you're worried that coding is too complicated for a child's mind, don't. Children in kindergarten are able to easily grasp the concepts of coding. And the trainers in the camps know how to teach kids in an age-appropriate way. So, get the kids out of bed this summer and off to prepare for their bright futures in tech. Here are a few places to get you started.
