This Saturday, 25th May 2024 at Eugenia Art & Recreation center, Athol Fugard's 'The Island' comes to life. The South African play inspired by a Greek tragedy is a Tony-Award winning masterpiece and you can watch it right here at home.
Here's what to know: John and Winston, political prisoners and cellmates at South Africa's infamous Robben Island, endure grueling days of labor under the sun. In the evenings, they retreat to their dark cell to rehearse a makeshift performance of Sophocles' play Antigone.
Antigone is set in ancient Greece and was written by Sophocles. Sophocles' play is set in ancient Thebes and follows Antigone, daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta. She defies King Creon's decree by burying her brother Polyneices, slain in battle against Thebes. Written in the 5th century BCE, the tragedy explores themes of personal morality versus state law, justice, fate, and hubris, sparking centuries of contemplation.
