In the annals of history, certain productions stand as powerful testaments to the struggles and triumphs of a nation. "Sarafina!" is one such cinematic masterpiece that continues to resonate with audiences, capturing the essence of a pivotal moment in the fight against apartheid in South Africa.

Inspired by the indelible mark left by the 1976 'Soweto Uprising,' the film was brought to life in August 1991, the world bore witness to a gripping narrative set against the backdrop of the anti-apartheid struggle.

In Kenya, Nairobi Performing Arts Studio (NPAS), under the directorship of founder Stuart Nash, has showcased Sarafina, the musical as a riveting stage production in 2018 and 2019. Now, after a five-year hiatus, Sarafina makes a triumphant return to the Kenya National Theater stage from August 15th 2024.

Last time Sarafina was on stage in Kenya, the theater was packed and a multitude of enthusiasts were turned away. This August, NPAS will showcase 12 shows to ensure as many people as possible get a chance to watch the show.

This time around, the cast is new and the set is expected to be bigger. Lorna Lemi will be playing Sarafina while Wakio Mzenge is playing Mary Masembuko.

The production will also incorporate commentary from the recent protests in Kenya. It will be interesting to see how the director will pull it off.
