At the just concluded KidsCon, I met the Shujaa Stories team. They are creatives and historians teaching Kenyan kids (and adults alike) forgotten Kenyan history. Shujaa stories breathes life into the legends of Kenyan heroes in a manner that is both entertaining and enlightening.
Through ballet, the production celebrates the extraordinary lives of heroes such as Untulo, Wangu Wa Makeri, The Makonde, Syonguu, Ireri Wa Irugi, Muyaka Bin Haji, Queen Amanirenas, Sultan Yusuf, Gasara Winn, Lenana, and Mekatilili Wa Menza, with plans to honor 50 more heroes in the coming years.
Shujaa Stories is an educational journey meticulously crafted by Tatu Creatives and showcased at the National Musuem of Kenya Nairobi.
The team at Shujaa Stories have added a new heroine to the series--- Anyango Nyamlolwe (Daughter of the lake.)
What we now know as Lake Victoria was once named Namlolwe after a legendary luo heroine. She is revered for calming waters and preventing calamities in Luo folklore.
Read her incredible story here. If your kids are interested in Kenyan history and heritage you can get them the entire Shujaa Stories catalog here.
