Safaricom have also introduced a "Reverse Call" feature, a throwback to the 90s callbox era. The feature allows callers to divert the cost of the call to the recipient. This service is enabled by adding a hashtag (#) before the phone number. The feature was created to enable customers to reach their loved ones even if they don't have airtime.
"This innovation has been tailored to mirror the relationships between our customers with a goal of empowering them to always remain connected with their loved ones," Sylvia Mulinge, Chief Safaricom's Customer Officer said.
When the number is dialed with a request to reverse the charge, i.e. when you dial #0722xxxxxx, the customer receiving the call will see it appear as normal. When they answer the call, they will be prompted to dial "1" so as to accept the reverse call.
Call costs will remain the same.
The feature does not apply to non-Safaricom calls, roaming calls and international calls.
In addition to the Please Call Me feature, this feature presents a wonderful opportunity to save money when dialing money-bagged relatives.
