Being a person who is not yet a parent, you may be wondering why I would be giving out these tips and tricks to use on your children. Well, I can assure you that regardless, I have learned them from the masters themselves; my parents! My siblings and I each had our fair share of snack obsessions and my parents eventually had to come up with unique strategies to keep us in check. Fortunately for them yet unfortunately for us, a few of these tricks could still be used on us today as adults and still somehow work!

With that, here are the tried-and-true methods that are guaranteed to outsmart your kids' snack obsessions, Kenyan style:

The Snack Time Rotation: This method is especially true for the little ones between the ages of 2 and 6. Rotate snack options regularly to keep things fresh and exciting. It works for them because kids of that age cohort are always looking for the next best thing. They are still developing their cognitive skills and memory and introducing them to many different snacks would prevent them from getting attached to one specific kind. Implement a rotating snack schedule to also encourage them to enjoy a variety of healthier options.

Guess the snack surprise: I believe that this method works on all children! My mum loved buying different kinds of snacks and every time she bought something, she would try and make us guess what it was with a cheeky look. We would always get so excited to guess what she had in her bag and that anticipation made us appreciate whatever she got us even more which was almost always a hit. Turn snack time into a fun event by occasionally surprising your kids with a new snack or a creative twist on an old favorite.

Snack Saturation Strategy: If your child is the obsessive type, avoid this method as much as possible because it will not work on them. Even so, for kids like me who get fed up with the same thing over and over, it is the most effective. Provide them with the same snack over and over and they will eventually not want it again. Sounds ridiculous for sure, but it worked on me and my siblings and our juice obsession. As you do so, be careful not to over provide them with the snack as it may become a hazard health-wise. Oversaturate with moderation!
