From Here to Timbuktu is a children's edutainment short film by Kenyan creatives Buni Media. It follows four curious 11-year-olds from Kenya, South Africa, Senegal, and Egypt who travel back to 16th century Timbuktu during the Saadian Invasion of 1593.
On this day, the Saadian army, led by Pasha Mahmud ibn Zarqun, ransacked Timbuktu, burned libraries, and deported scholars, including Ahmed Baba. The young travelers meet Professor Ahmed Baba and help save his books, guided by a mysterious teacher who provides historical context.
The film addresses a gap in children's education, focusing on ancient African history often overlooked in schools, which tend to emphasize colonial and post-colonial periods. By highlighting the importance of this history, the film aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation among children.
From Here to Timbuktu is targeted at children aged 7-13 and is available online for rent or purchase here.
