Charlie's Angels are back in a "new" crime-fighting movie. Starring Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Naomi Scott (Aladdin) and Ella Balisnka, the film moves on entirely from the original reboot of Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. This new movie has left fans with conflicted emotions.
Stewart plays a wildcard Sabrina Wilson, supposed to be reminiscent of Barrymore's Dylan. However, it seems to miss the mark. Stewart doesn't give the same exuberance and charisma of Drew Barrymore.
The entire trailer felt a lot more like the cartoon of a trio of women spies, Totally Spies. Full of gadgetry, campiness and flagrant ridiculousness. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, who also stars as Moseby (previously played by Bill Murray), it also brags an impressive cast with Djimon Honsou and Patrick Stewart. The trailer is accompanied by a song by Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey.
The film appears to be going for an action comedy approach such as Kingsman but it seems to fail to live up to it. But perhaps the trailer is misleading and as more information comes to light about the film, it will leave us with an eagerness to watch it rather than a dread to endure it.
But if you are hoping for female badassery akin to Atomic Blonde or Salt, don't hold your breath. Perhaps if you went in with a mind expecting the live action Powerpuff Girls, you'll be in better luck. The movie premieres in November 2019.
