Amazon TV is rolling out the big guns when it comes to future plans. The video on demand streaming site announced earlier this year their purchase of the rights to the Lord of the Rings Franchise from Tolkien at a whooping $250 million dollars with the intention of turning the books into a TV series.
The show will centre on young Aragon, one of the main protagonists in Lord of the Rings and the last high king of the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor. Amazon has set up an insanely expensive budget for the show at $1 billion dollars expecting it to run for five seasons. The series will not be a direct adaptation of the novel, rather, inspiration for the script will be derived from the notes and appendices written by Tolkien in the film.
Amazon has picked up J.D Payne and Patrick McKay, who will co-write the screenplay in the upcoming Star Trek 4 film. Both Payne and McKay are  also part of the writer's room Godzilla vs. King slated for 2020.
The tentative release date for the series is 2021. Production is scheduled to start in late 2019.
