I had the pleasure of attending the premiere of Boda Love last Friday, and let me just say—it pulls all the right strings for a Kenyan audience. The film blends a rich combination of romance and a little bit of mystery, with a setting that is instantly relatable. Compared to many Kenyan films, the acting felt refreshingly natural. I was fully immersed in the storyline as if it was happening in real life.

From the familiar streets of Nairobi to Jabari snacking on maize and the vivid portrayal of life in Kaloleni, the film feels authentically Kenyan. A personal highlight was Jabari's family, especially his grandmother, teasing Charlotte in Kiswahili. It was hilarious and so typical of Kenyans. The banter was on point, especially when Charlotte revealed she actually understood quite a bit of what they were saying! That scene had the audience bursting into laughter!

The two leads, Jabari (the boda guy) and Charlotte (the rich girl), come from worlds apart. Although there is a sharp contrast between their lifestyles, Boda Love balances their connection quite sweetly. Charlotte, despite her wealthy background, is willing to meet Jabari halfway, while Jabari goes above and beyond to make her comfortable after she gets scammed by her fiancé and robbed.

I could feel their love slowly developing; it didn't feel rushed or forced. The slow burn of their relationship is one of the film's strengths, with Jabari falling for Charlotte long before she realizes it. It's cheeky at times, especially the rooftop sweater scene—so typical yet so real for Nairobians!

Charlotte's naivety is both a blessing and a curse. While it left her vulnerable to being scammed by her fiancé, Arthur, it also enabled her to embrace new connections. Trusting Jabari's family so readily, despite her past experiences, seems quite unrealistic. Regardless, it was a vital part of her journey in the story.

My only critique of the movie is the generic ending. A cliffhanger would have been more interesting. That said, the cinematography and the dynamic between Jabari and Charlotte make up for it.

If you're looking for a film that captures the spirit of Nairobi while offering a genuine love story, this is definitely worth a watch!
