Mombasa based artist, Beka the Boy is a rising star and we have our eye on him. His latest single, level featuring Petra is a hit. This is a different sound from his usual bongo music and we had the opportunity to chat with him about the change of genre.
KENYABUZZ: What do you love most about singing?
BEKA: Music is my talent and I have always had a passion for singing since I was a child.
KENYABUZZ: What inspires your music?
BEKA: I get inspirations from lots of thing, it could be something that I'm experiencing or something that one of my friends is going through or just a suggestion from someone. So it doesn't necessarily have to be something that I'm going through.
KENYABUZZ: With your latest single Level, what was the inspiration behind it?
BEKA: My style of music over the years has been afro pop and love songs so I wanted to venture in a different kind of genre being trap, and also getting a chance to do a collabo for the first time with a female rapper.
KENYABUZZ: What led you to try a different genre of music?
BEKA: As a musician you need to understand the market and know what the market needs, and right now a lot of people are consuming trap music and I wanted to try it and also gain more fan base from the specific genre as well as breaking monotony.
KENYABUZZ: How was it working with the sort after director Kevin Bosko?
BEKA: I have worked with Kevin Bosko on three videos now, Level being the latest one. He is a brilliant director and a hardworking person and I'm privileged to work with him.
KENYABUZZ: Is music a full time job?
BEKA: Yes
KENYABUZZ: If you weren't a musician, what would you be?
BEKA: Before I became a musician I played football, so I would probably be a footballer.
KENYA BUZZ: If you could collaborate with anyone in Kenya, Africa and internationally, who would it be?
BEKA: Kenya has great talent but currently I'm in the process of doing a collabo with Kaligraph. I would also like to collabo with Ben Paul from Tanzania, Flavour from Nigeria and on international level working with Ne-yo will be a dream come true.
KENYA BUZZ: What is your take on the music industry in Kenya currently?
BEKA: There are lots of upcoming artists that are coming up and the industry has definitely grown, the music is more modern now. Though upcoming musicians have it rough getting recognition, mainly because the industry is biased and it's only music from specific artists that get to be played on radio stations. So new artists have to fight hard to get into the system.
KENYA BUZZ: What interesting thing(s) about yourself would you want your fans to know that is different from other Musicians?
BEKA: My style is very different with obviously good melody and great composition. I have content that reaches people of all ages from young to old.
