The Island is a play originally written by Athol Fugard, John Kani, and Winston Ntshona. The play is set on Robben Island, a former prison in Cape Town, South Africa, and follows two inmates, John and Winston, as they serve out the last days of their sentences. The play is incredibly powerful and emotionally charged from the very beginning.
The play addresses issues of racism and oppression, which were rampant in South Africa during the time of the play's setting. Athol's play has been praised for its powerful writing and various renditions of the play have been showcased around the world.
Now adapted for Kenyan audiences, The Island will be showing on May 25th at 2024 at Eugenia Park arts and recreation center off Thika Highway. Directed Alacoque Ntome, The play promises a powerful and moving reflection of apartheid era South Africa.
