There's been a lot of heated debates surrounding women's sexuality and reproductive rights on Kenyan social media lately and the discussions haven't been too helpful.
The TusemeZane Sasa Podcast provides a platform to host life-changing conversations about sexual and reproductive health for women and girls. Hosted by Esther Kimani, the podcast takes on essential topics in the face of sexual and reproductive health, healthcare, and what people think and know about these topics in Kenya.
Set up in 'myth-busting' format, the podcast explores questions like: what does the law actually say about abortion in Kenya? Where do people go to find quality healthcare, especially when they don't have money, and they are underage?
The first episode of the podcast series, called The Actual Truth, focuses on clearing the fog of misinformation around these discussions.
In Kenya, reproductive health and rights are used more as a bargaining chip for individuals and organizations that could care less, and have been weaponized against the very women and girls who are supposed to be enjoying constitutional access to quality healthcare. Because of this, fake news and pseudo research abound - just like the rumours surrounding, for example, the real purpose of crisis pregnancy centres.
The goal is to have a platform for 'taboo conversations,' and increase awareness about and wellbeing of girls and women. With this podcast, the hope is that with more information, comes more informed decisions, for women and girls, and everyone around them, including healthcare professionals, policy makers, and activists.
