Overview
TOO EARLY FOR BIRDS is a Kenyan theatre show that retells, presents, and narrates the most scintillating parts of Kenyan history that school books failed to mention.
This will be the 7th edition of TOO EARLY FOR BIRDS - a series of storytelling shows that has been retelling Kenyan history in a fresh, funky style. Since 2017, we have narrated the stories of Wangari Maathai, The Nyayo House Survivors, Zarina Patel, Timothy Njoya, Field Marshal Muthoni Wa Kirima, Otenyo Nyamatere, Syokimau, Paul Ngei, William McMillan, the resistance at Lumboka and Chetambe, amongst many others... And now:
July 2024 marks 55 years since Tom Mboya's assassination. One of Kenya's most mind-boggling mysteries can be distilled into one question: who killed Tom Mboya? And why?
Okay, those are two questions. Both necessary. As one of the country's most illustrious luminaries, Thomas Joseph Odhiambo Mboya ? known simply as Tom to those who adored him and TJ to those privileged enough to be close to him, was a rare phenomenon. He embodied a new generation of young, brilliant, tireless Africans who were hellbent on making the best out of freshly independent African nations. We grew up with this enigma hanging over our heads. Yet 50 years since two assassin bullets ended his life, no one has filled his shoes. Now that we are in a position to do so, we would like to dig deeper and learn who this fast-rising star was.
How did a boy from the laborer quarters of a colonial settler farm come to be friends with Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy? before he was 30 years old?! We'd love to know what the effects of his initiatives, such as the airlifts that bequeathed us the likes of Wangari Maathai, Barack Obama and Philip Ochieng, really were. We are exploring stories from Tom Mboya?s life? and death. The juicy, the astounding, the jarring, the tantalising stories; and we would love want to share those stories on stage with you.
**The show has explicit/violent content. We recommend it for 18+ folks.**
