Overview

'Artists have always recognized the sacred qualities of nature. I grew up on a farm in Western Kenya on the slopes of Mt Elgon where regular family camping trips brought my attention to the environment, nature, wildlife and climate which then became topics close to my heart.

I spent 6 years at University in Italy studying ancient Art Techniques and Art History, finally returning to Kenya where I noticed a lack of landscape documentation and began my career painting Kenyan landscapes and forests creating large scale nature themed murals for private and corporate clients.

Over the next few years I traveled extensively around Kenya recording landscapes in oil on canvas. I naturally became involved in various environmental Boards looking to protect those landscapes and the environment, wildlife, flora and fauna within them.

During my travels I met more people involved with conservation which gave me an insight into supporting Art and Environmental initiatives both as an artist and as an advocate at Administrative and Governmental level where I could see working together for balance and harmony was a great way to protect our national heritage as we looked for sustainability, long term solutions and balance between the coexistence of humans and wildlife in those sacred places'. - Camille Wekesa
