Bollywood actor turned director Kiran Rao's second directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies (Missing ladies) has social media talking. It addresses taboos of arranged marriage in India in a humorous way.  Set in the Indian countryside, this movie follows the journeys of two women who go "missing" after their weddings. Both marriages are arranged, so the couples are unfamiliar with each other, and the brides are veiled in similar red garments so it's actually a bride swap.
A dramedy ensues while their husbands embark on quests to 'find' them.
Despite a modest release and minimal marketing, the movie has seen a significant surge in earnings in India indicating audience appetite for quality content. With a blend of situational comedy and social commentary, the film tackles themes of patriarchy and societal norms, shedding light on women's autonomy and agency.
