Yo! I Have Discovered My Culinary Paradise

Yo! Food

If I ever had to pick one mundane life task that I wish I could get out of, it would probably have to be choosing what to eat after a long day’s work. I mean, I usually find it incredibly nerve-wracking trying to decide whether I should settle for a quick greasy kuku quarter or if I should go for that fancy meal at that fancy restaurant that I would love going to every single day if only my heart could take the rich delights of that prime rib that I so love to eat.

Some days I could delude myself into splurging on a decadent meal just to excite my palate. Other days, you can find me holed up in my living room nibbling on a variety of snacks trying to pass it off as dinner, pretty much out of laziness than anything else.

Finding an affordable well-balanced ready-to-eat meal is no walk in the park. I’m always looking for ways to add some spice to my food. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw that billboard with the huge pink lips one cold Monday morning.

Yo! Gourmet meals, now that was something I had never heard about! The billboard that was plastered along Ring Road suggested that the owners of that advertising message could offer me a ready-to-eat gourmet meal. Let’s just stop there and talk about this for a second.

When I think about gourmet meals, what comes to mind is Gordon Ramsay hurling colourful words at a hapless chef as they try to transform expensive French-sounding ingredients into a delicious meal the size of a twenty shilling coin. I had to try it!

So I walked into Chandarana Supermarket and scrutinized the various Yo! Gourmet meal options on offer. I am a lake boy so after an intense second of furious glancing it was only natural that I settle for the safe option; the garlic butter fish it was! There were ten other varieties that I could have chosen...the Mutter Paneer, Chicken Kiev, Chicken Stroganoff, Mushroom Corn Masala, Paprika Fish, Pepper Steak, Mushroom Steak, Lemon Chicken, Grilled Chicken in Creamy Mustard & Tarragon Sauce and the Grilled Chicken in Creamy Onion and Basil Sauce.

Anyway, so I race back home because… hunger. Pop open the pack and put in the microwave. I’ve never quite believed in microwaved meals so you can understand my apprehension as to what I would expect. I opened up the plastic wrap and the aroma that filled up my kitchen was clear indication that these guys meant business. It was like I had walked into the kitchen of a five star hotel. The smell alone would have done it for me but as we all know the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

So I take a spoonful of the mashed potatoes and vegetables which come with the fish and empty its contents in my mouth. I quickly follow that with a mouthful of garlic butter fish and whoa! Have you ever had something so good that you find yourself involuntarily doing a celebratory jig as your taste buds dance in excitement? That was me. For a full minute or so I did a complete ndombolo solo as I enjoyed the burst of flavor that had exploded in my mouth.

This was it! I had discovered my culinary paradise.
