October 16th is World Food Day. This year's #WorldFoodDay marks the 75th Anniversary of the founding of FAO. With a view to looking towards the future, this year's theme is  "Grow, nourish, sustain". The call to action this year is for us to produce food responsibly, ensure everyone gets proper nutrition and practice agriculture sustainability.
A steady increase in hunger since 2014 together with rising obesity, clearly indicates the need to accelerate and scale up actions to strengthen food systems and protect people's livelihoods. (FAO 2019).
A healthy diet contributes to a healthy life. When we choose to eat diverse foods, we encourage a variety of foods to be produced. This is not only healthier for our bodies, but healthier for soils and our environment because a diverse diet favours biodiversity.
A simple way to stay on theme is to support organic food outlets that practice sustainability and produce nutritional food.
Here's where you can get organic food/produce around the country
Shamba Cafe
Shamba is a farm-to-table  Café & Shop which is part of a 500-acre farm at the University of Nairobi. Shamba hosts a farmer's market every Saturday, which offers locally grown and hand-made products. Organic vegetables are available on Wednesdays from their subsidiary EcoScapes.
Kayole Social Justice Centre
Support vulnerable women and youth in Kayole by purchasing organically grown vegetables from Kayole Social Justice centre.
Mlango Farm Limuru
Mlango's  (Encert certified) weekly organic vegetable basket is growing, thanks to Kamande and Els' dedication to their seven year old farm.
Pick up your Ksh 800 basket of seasonal produce from various locations, including Rhapta Road, Spring Valley, Loresho and Riverside.
Kalimoni Greens
Kalimoni Greens in Karen is Nairobi's largest organic grocery store with an excellent online section and delivery service.

The Organic Farmers Market is more than a place to stock up on organic products - though they do have plenty of those. Their  farmers come directly to you with their goods and are always happy to discuss their produce. Visit them every Saturday at KSPCA, along Lang'ata road from 9am to 4pm.
K1 Farmers Market
The #K1farmersmarket happens this (and every) Saturday from 10AM to 4PM. They have fresh, organic products including gluten-free snacks, organic flour, homemade chili, pastry, and so much more. Charges are 300 every week - part of which is redeemable at any of the vendor stalls
