‘The Magicians’ Series Review: Not Quite As Magical

Being a lover of fantasy novels, movies and TV shows, you can see why ‘The Magicians’ seemed very appealing to me. I had a lot of expectations going into the series but was quickly put in my place by the bad writing, acting and general execution of the show.

Based on the magical book series by Lev Grossman, ‘The Magicians’ was adapted for TV by Syfy but wasn’t quite as magical as I had hoped.

The story revolves around Quentin Coldwater and his group of friends who try to maneuver their lives in the magical world. They go to a prestigious magic school: Brakebills University that like Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series, puts the students’ lives in danger almost every other second.

The show is a little slow and the spells a little boring. I mean, Charmed did a way better job and that was over 10 years ago. The acting from some of the actors is also wanting but I feel like we can blame this on direction and not necessarily lack of talent.

Watching ‘The Magicians’ felt like I was watching a bad Harry Potter parody. I had a lot of hope for the series after watching the trailers and reading the plotline but the actual show left a lot to be desired. I was hoping the show would have been picked up by a network like HBO, Showtime or even Netflix since they would have executed the story better. I also can’t get over the fact that they’re referred to as ‘Magicians’ and not ‘Witches’ or ‘Wizards’.

Here’s to hoping that the second season will be better, but the first one was a little mediocre to be honest.
