The Oscar-winning animated feature film, Soul, from Pixar Animation Studios is now in theaters again after being released on streaming sites at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. It follows the story of Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), a middle-school band teacher. Joe seizes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at the city's premier jazz club.
However, a small misstep transports him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before, a whimsical realm where souls acquire their personalities, quirks, and interests before embarking on their earthly journeys.
Soul is the first Pixar movie to feature a mostly black ensemble. The characters are beautifully illustrated and the music is great.
This dialogue between Joe and the Jazz musician Dorothea really did something to me:
Dorothea: What's wrong, Teach?
Joe: It's just I've been waiting on this day for... my entire life. I thought I'd feel different.
Dorothea: I heard this story about a fish. He swims up to this older fish and says, "I'm trying to find this thing they call the ocean. "The ocean?" says the older fish. "That's what you're in right now." "This?" says the young fish. "This is water. What I want is the ocean."
[Joe just stares, bewildered]
Dorothea : See you tomorrow.
I hope you find your purpose :)
