Patriots Day Movie Review

Patriots Day is based on the true and tragic story of the Boston Marathon Bombing that occurred on April 15, 2013 where two homemade bombs were detonated near the finish line of the race. This film looks to capture these events and the immediate response of the American security forces to track down the culprits. Directed and written by Peter Berg who brings along a solid cast of A-list stars.

The film starts off by showing us various households across Boston, some preparing for the marathon, others, although not known to us yet, later molding into the story in various different ways. Things kick into gear as soon as the bomb goes off; from that point on until the very last scene, it’s an emotional rollercoaster that does not relent.

The writing, directing, pacing and action are spot on throughout. One scene in particular with regards to the action, was brilliantly executed as the police get into a shootout with the terrorists. Peter Berg (Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor – both also starring Mark Wahlberg) has a knack for this kind of films; and it is apparent in Patriots Day.

As mentioned earlier, the various characters that we see in the beginning all become relevant as the film progresses. Some of them even cross paths with the terrorists. What’s notable about the film is how it focuses on these everyday people, personalising them thus drawing the audience close to them. Probably the only character I wished to see more of was J.K Simmons’.

Mark Wahlberg definitely picked the right projects last year. And he is excellent in both Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day. It is a bit of a surprise he is not an Oscar nominee for either. Another element that works well is how they incorporated real live footage of the terrorists’ movements after the attack, in effect blending reality seamlessly into the story.

I definitely recommend Patriots Day. It is a compelling story which is well written and directed that shows the human spirit at its best.
