Oscars 2017 Preview

Set your clocks for an early morning this Monday, February 27th. The 89th Academy Awards ceremony will be airing from 4am Kenyan time.

There’s a huge shakeup in this year’s edition following 2016’s “Oscars So White” controversy. The list of nominees, especially in the major categories, is more diverse and inclusive. Minority actors up for acting recognition include Denzel Washington and Ruth Negga who are contesting for Best Actor and Actress, Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali, Dev Patel, Naomie Harris and Octavia Spencer who are all nominated in the Best Supporting categories.

There’s a lot to look forward to in this year’s awards show. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel will host the ceremony for the first time. It will be interesting how he picks up after Chris Rock’s remarkable performance from last year.

Also, La La Land (yet to hit Kenyan cinemas) – which according to most critics is one of the best films ever released in the last decade – may make some Oscars history. Its 14 nominations are record-tying, matching those of Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950). But it is predicted that the movie could set a winning record to surpass the current 11 held by Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). La La Land has already claimed the Golden Globes wins record from the ceremony held earlier this year.

Look out for some surprises though. There are a lot of very strong, and deserving nominees in each category. In the Best Picture class, films like Arrival, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight and Hidden Figures all come in with a credible shot. In the Best Animated Feature, it comes down to Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana and Zootopia.

Check the full list of nominations here. You can catch the 2017 Academy Awards ceremony live online and DStv Premium. E! News (124) will be live from the red carpet starting from 1.30am Kenyan time.
