Mukami is a young girl juggling school work and the ominous threat of dropping out of school because of retrogressive societal expectations in her small village in Tharaka-Nithi. In this eponymous coming-of-age story, our heroine is tenacious even in the face of hostility towards her education. A retired doctor comes to the rescue when she is close to the edge and introduces chess to her. Mukami uses her new found new skill to go after her dreams.
