Justin Mungai, the acclaimed Kenyan fashion designer based in New York and co-founder of The Wakilisha Collection, has recently unveiled his latest exhilarating collection during the prestigious New York Fashion Week which ran from the 7th to the 13th of September.
Collaborating with co-designer and CFO Linda Kieu, as well as COO Gatere Kigamwa, Justin presented 15 dazzling new prints, set to be publicly available on October 15, 2023. The prints, crafted from a fusion of Kikoy, Maasai, and Kitenge fabrics, each boast a unique pattern and design, and are offered in a diverse range of suit styles curated by The Wakilisha Collection.
In addition to their existing line-up, The Wakilisha Collection unveiled five new suit styles during their show at New York Fashion Week, hosted at the Runway 7 Spring/Summer 2024 Collections event at Sony Hall in New York City.
New York Fashion Week, which takes place twice annually in February and September, is an internationally acclaimed event held in New York City and stands as one of the four major fashion weeks worldwide, alongside London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks. It draws together fashion enthusiasts from across the globe who come to revel in the debut of the latest collections from top designers, engaging in runway shows, opening galas, after-parties, and more.
For Justin, who hails from Nairobi, his lifelong passion for vibrant and captivating East African prints has remained a constant thread throughout his life, even into adulthood. Over time, he, along with his fiancée Linda Kieu (who also serves as the company's CFO) and his lifelong friend Gatere Kigamwa (the COO of the company), decided to transform this ardor for African prints into a thriving business venture.
Today, their enterprise has blossomed into a premier clothing company renowned for crafting authentic, made-to-measure African print suits. The fabrics are meticulously sourced from Kenya, their design process spans continents, and the final garments are masterfully tailored in Kenya before being shipped to clientele around the world.
As a forward-thinking business, The Wakilisha Collection was born during the pandemic, conducting all transactions online. Furthermore, the company offers complimentary mobile tailoring services to their Nairobi-based customers, accommodating their preferences.
