On the top right-hand corner of one of the local dailies is an article about a Chinese restaurant with a 'no Africans after 5pm policy'. Way to get the readers' attention!
The restaurant, simply called the Chinese Restaurant, is located at the junction of Galana and Lenana roads in Kilimani Nairobi. It does not admit African patrons after 5pm unless they are accompanied by Chinese, Europeans or Indians; are taxi drivers or Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko and former minister Raphael Tuju.
As expected, Kenyans have taken to social media to express their displeasure with the restaurant, referring to it as racist and calling for its license to be revoked.
I'm not from that school of thought and here is why:
1. The management reserves the right of admission.
2. The establishment has been robbed before and by 'Africans'. It is only being careful because as the relations manager claims in an interview with the daily, "it is not like it is written on somebody's face that they are a thug armed with a gun." So until the Chinese Restaurant is robbed by men of another race and it does not dismiss that particular race's patronage after 5pm, you cannot call the restaurant racist.
3. If you are not wanted somewhere, you do not force yourself in- it is called good manners. Doing so will only confirm the restaurant's fears that led to this controversial policy in the first place.
4. You will not die if you do not eat Chinese food from this specific restaurant. Or from any at all for that matter!
5. But if you cannot live without Chinese food- from this restaurant, then please have the courtesy not to show up after 5pm. Or else:
*Sue the restaurant for discrimination.
*Spend Kshs. 20, 000 over the time period specified by the management. That way you will belong to the group of 'loyal' Africans worthy of dining at the restaurant after sundown.
*Make a formal complaint to the office of the ombudsman which can pressure the licensing authorities to revoke its license because racial discrimination is illegal in Kenya.
