Home is not where the heart is in "Sweet Thing"

The old adage Home is where the heart is may apply to others but not for teenage siblings Billie and Nico. Mum's an absent and irresponsible parent and Dad is a raging alcoholic who shows rare affection when sober.

When Dad is forced into rehab, mum's creepy boyfriend moves in and events take a twisted turn forcing Billie and Nico to run away from home. They befriend an equally down-on-luck teen, Malik, and their personal struggles make for heartbreaking yet illuminating viewing.

Themes of coming of age, alcoholism, sexual abuse and resilience are explored in this film.

Director Alexandre Rockwell cast his wife and kids as the protagonists of the film so it's interesting to watch the family dynamic play out.
