Ever heard of the Geminid meteor showers? No? Well, we've got you covered.
For space enthusiasts, this is one of the most exciting times of the year. December is the time of the year when the Geminid meteor shower is active. This is when earth passes through a trail of dusty debris, shed by a rocky object known as the 3200 Phaethon, the parent body of this shower. For those who only go as far as reading their horoscope, a phaethon is sometimes known as a rock comet.
Why is it unmissable?
I bet you're wondering why this Geminid meteor shower is such a trending topic. That's because its a once-a-year type of shebang. Imagine waiting for a phone call for an entire year... stressing situation, right? That makes it a big deal to skywatchers. Yes, I'm sure you've seen a couple of meteors in your lifetime but I'm pretty sure nothing beats the beauty of the Geminid meteor shower.
When should you look up?
The Geminid meteor shower has been active from Tuesday, December 4 and will be until Monday, December 17 2018. The shower will peak on the night of Friday, December 14. So, when is the best time to watch these incredible showers? The answer to that is during peak night time, around 2am. That is, 2am in the entire globe... crazy right? The meteors appear bold, white and quick. Big question is, why 2am? Thats because the shower's radiant point, is the highest in the sky.
Any equipment required?
Nah. None. Just your eyes and a blanket to keep you warm. Make sure you find a clear, dark, open sky and get comfortable. I would advise a sleeping bag and some hot cocoa. Get comfortable on the ground and look up to the sky.
What's the weather like?
Sadly for Nairobi city dwellers, there are expected to be rain showers on Friday night as per the Kenya Meteorological Department, however we can always hold some hope for some clearance in the sky.
What if I can't go out?
Don't feel bad if you're not able to stay up or be outside at 2am. You can livestream it on YouTube below and enjoy the light show from the comfort of your bed.
