Lorena has been forced to return to Mexico after her sister got involved in an accident. She had fled to Guatemala and was already getting adjusted to life there after getting a new job. She however received news from Alejandro that Gabriela was hit by a car and slipped into a coma. Lorena was worried about her sister and thus decided to return to Mexico.

When Lorena arrived in Mexico, Alejandro helped her visit Gabriela disguised as a nurse. She was almost caught by the doctor but she was able to escape before he recognized her. Gabriela later woke up from her coma but Lorena was not able to go visit her again.

Since Gabriela and Lorena are orphans, the Marquez family has been taking care of Gabriela. She is in a relationship with Arturo's son, Vicente and he moved in with her after Lorena went to prison. This caused a rift between the sisters since Lorena wanted Gabriela to stay away from the Marquez family because they are the ones who convicted her for Juan Pablo's murder. Lorena was worried that the Marquez family is using Gabriela to get information about her but Gabriela refused to end her relationship with Vicente.
