Established in 2017 by publisher Angela Wachuka and author Wanjiru Koinange, Book Bunk is a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing city libraries.
Their efforts extend beyond mere renovations, encompassing everything from upgrading physical infrastructure to enriching book collections. Additionally, the team has successfully converted these libraries into vibrant event spaces that foster intellectual exploration and honor the art of writing.
Notably, they play a key role in hosting the Nairobi Literature Festival, contributing to the celebration of literature and encouraging a reading culture for young people in Nairobi.
As part of their community efforts to encourage kids to visit the library, they have these free programs at the Eastlands and Kaloleni branches:
Hepa Jam
The Hepa Jam program promotes the use of the library as a sanctuary from Nairobi's notorious traffic jams. It introduces extended library hours, providing an extra 16 hours per week, along with various activities and support services. These include the availability of qualified academic tutors to assist learners with homework and adult education, covering topics such as digital skills, tax information, legal workshops, and more.
Under the Academic Support initiative, trained teachers and tutors are enlisted to offer free homework assistance and academic guidance to library users. This service is specifically offered at Eastlands and Kaloleni Libraries, with the following schedule:
 Weekdays: 5 PM - 8 PM
Saturdays: 9:30 AM - 1 PM
The main subjects covered during tutoring sessions include:

ECD & Grade 1 to 3: All subjects
Primary School Grade 4 to 8: Maths, Kiswahili, English, and Science
Secondary School
Prior registration is required for participation.

Play Bunk
Play Bunk encourages library users to step away from their desks and play! The Eastlands and Kaloleni libraries are fitted with several recreational activities such as LEGO bricks, board games and more. Users are encouraged to make use of these facilities whenever they'd like to, but they also have scheduled group play days!
Upcoming Schedule
Every second and fourth Saturday of the month, from 12:00pm - 1:00pm.

No registration required. Walk-ins encouraged!
