‘Batman: The Killing Joke’ Movie Review

DC Universe Animated Original Movies adds another movie to its rapidly expanding series. This year, we get a film based upon one of the most famous and dark storylines which really goes deep into Joker’s psychology, depicting his past.

Batman: The Killing Joke is written by Alan Moore, and beautifully illustrated by Brian Bolland. It is voiced by the returning cast of Batman: The Animated Series including Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker and Tara Strong as Barbara Gordon.

Before I saw The Killing Joke, I decided to grab my copy of the graphic novel to help me draw comparisons between the film and the source material. One stand out thing is the precision with which the iconic imagery and dialogue from the book is integrated. Mark Hamill as The Joker and Kevin Conroy are perfect as always.

This being a fairly short story we get the prologue which involves Batgirl and her relationship with Batman. This is done with an aim to add depth to her character. For me, here is where my reservations are brought up. The Batgirl plotline does not have the desired impact intended.

I like seeing change and different adaptation styles, however, if there is going to be one, it’s best to always make it worthy. The Batgirl storyline was longer than it should have been and frankly it dragged the movie down, even adding a completely unnecessary scene involving said characters. The movie’s story really begins about 30 minutes in.

Despite slightly falling short of expectation, The Killing Joke is a decent offering; just the few things that could have been done better with the story. And for that, I rate it 3/5 Stars.

*Catch Batman: The Killing Joke on DStv BoxOffice starting Monday, August 8th.
