Artist Profile: Abdul Razak Ahmed

14 Apr 2014

Art is a universal language.”

Born in April,1976 in Lagos State,Nigeria, Razaq or Abdul, is from Etsako West, Edo State Nigeria. Unusually a muslim from a predominantly identified Christian group.

Ironically he graduated in 2005 from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, famous for its visual arts department in Urban and Regional Planning in 2005 despite the fact that he had always painted. At the university, his chosen elective courses were from The Fine Art Department where he was privileged to be lectured by the likes of Philip Gushem, Kefas Danjuma, Dr. Nkom, Babatunde Babalola, Mal.Mu’azau Sani, and Jerry Buhari all renowned artists and art historians in their own right.

After graduation, he continued to dabble in painting, experimenting and researching the use of common and local materials in his work. So while he studied briefly at the Zaria school, his technique is markedly different to that of the Zaria Art School.

His concept isn’t intentional to his environment; he is an artist who deliberates and mulls over his intention so that every line, every stroke is imbued with meaning; the works produced are often preceded by a long thoughtful process, periods of tortuous gestation, compositions, designs, material explorations before they are borne.
