Tanzanian Doreen Mashika Named African Designer for Tomorrow

African Designer for Tomorrow

Designer Doreen Nemael Mashika has been named FA254’s African Designers for Tomorrow (ADFT) competition winner. This first of its kind competition aims to give African designers an international edge to access, compete and distribute in the European market. 

Mashika edged out nine other finalists at the competition judged by a jury made up of global fashion shot-callers led by Vogue Germany’s chief editor Christine Arp, with the help of local fashion experts Diana Opoti, Evgeniya Khromina, Franklin Saiyalel, Ingrid Tamborin, Linda Muriithi and Marc Oliver.

The other finalists who were categorized under clothes, accessories and home deco designers included Anne Mpinga, Anthony Mulli, Lorna Abwonji, Ami Shah, Hardeep Channa, Ivy Chege, Gladys Macharia, Katungulu Mwendwa and Sisi King. Each of the category winners has been rewarded with an opportunity to design their own product with international companies: eBay Fashion (apparel), Manoqi (accessories) and Urbanara (home collection).

As the ADFT winner Mashika, who is based in Zanzibar, will showcase her collection during Berlin Fashion Week and sell it exclusively on eBay in 2015.

FA254 is the brainchild of former Kenyan top model Waridi Schrobsdorff which seeks to discover and rebrand African creativity and present it to the world. On this competition, FA254 collaborated with Vogue Germany, ESMOD International Fashion School Berlin and eBay Fashion.

The ceremony to unveil the ADFT winner was held at the Sankara Nairobi’s Sarabi Hotel and sponsored by ABSOLUT Vodka which is renowned for its support for creativity and originality the world over.
