The Summer Paralympic Games 2016 begin today in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The games are the world’s largest sporting event for athletes with physical disabilities. This edition will see over 4,000 athletes from 160 countries compete in various medal events. 

Here’s a quick guide on everything you need to know about the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

When are the 2016 Paralympic Games?
The games kick off September 7th with an opening ceremony at the Maracana Stadium. They will go on until September 18th.

How many medal event will there be?
At the first official Paralympic Games, Rome 1960, there were 25 athletics events – at Rio 2016 there will be 224 medal events.

Where can I watch the games? will live stream 13 sports across the world with regular highlights of all 22. SuperSport on DStv will also broadcast the games live and in High Definition on two 24-hour channels (SS13 and SS14). Catch the opening ceremony from 11.30pm local time. The theme of the ceremony is “Every Body Has A Heart”, reflecting its focus on the human condition, feelings, difficulties, solidarity and love.

Who are some of the stars to look out for?
Ihar Boki, a visually impaired Belarusian swimmer whose times are almost as quick as those of sighted pros. Double amputee blade runner Alan Oliveira is also one to watch. He famously zoomed past a disbelieving Oscar Pistorius in the 200-metre sprint at the London 2012 Paralympics.

Who is the Rio 2016 mascot?
His name is Tom. He’s a natural – quite literally. Tom is formed out of nature’s rich diversity. He is a creation of Brazil’s tens of thousands of plants, drawn together.

How has Kenya performed in the Paralympics?
Kenya’s history at the Paralympic Games began at Heidelberg 1972. Athletics has yielded 40 of Kenya’s 42 medals (16 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze).

How is Kenya’s team for 2016?
Team Kenya is comprised of nine athletes who will compete in 11 events including athletics, powerlifting and rowing. Two of the athletes are women.

Who is Kenya’s flag bearer?
Partially blind Henry Kirwa will be Kenya’s flag bearer. He is Team Kenya’s oldest member at 43 years old and also the most decorated having tallied three golds at the 2008 Beijing games. He will compete in the 1500m and 5000m men’s athletics both of which he also owns the world records for in the T12/13 category.
