Overview
Stabat Mater is a 13th century Christian hymn that depicts the Virgin Mary's pain at the crucifixion of her son. The title is directly derived from the opening like "Stabat Mater dolorosa" which is translated to mean " the sorrowful mother was standing". This work has been set to music by many Western composers, with Antonin Dvorak's Stabat Mater among the most prominent versions.
