Before watching the movie, you should know that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a prequel to J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter movies. This movie is about a magizoologist by the name of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his encounters in the beautiful, dreamlike 1920s New York as he harmlessly walks around the cobblestone streets while his magical briefcase causes havoc all around the place, slowly and gradually.
The movie revolves around Newt trying his best to make sure that his briefcase full of magical creatures causes no harm to the city. Of course, there is a serious turn of events where these magical creatures get released and so the story follows Newt and his new American wizard-friends as they try to figure out a way to stop his magical creature from destroying the city.
Unlike the Harry Potter series, the main characters in this movie are all adults and therefore their story is a lot sterner. They deal with wizardry with a lot more maturity as opposed to Harry Potter, where most of the action was happening between young children (of course, that too, in its own way was exceptionally amusing).
Rowling did a great job in developing the characters throughout the story. Every character in this movie had a different role and a unique personality. There were a few characters in this movie such as Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) who really did well to develop the storyline and made the movie a lot more entertaining. Kowalski's character was very uplifting, and I personally feel like most people watching the movie could relate to him as the Fantasy world was new to him, as it was new to us.
Other than Kowalski, Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) also played a huge role in developing the story. He is a strong, powerful character who knows how to smoothly get what he wants through manipulation. His look was absolutely perfect for the role and his suave attire made him even more lovable. (My personal favourite character!)
Overall, you can say that it is rare for a writer to live up to the expectations that they set after writing award-winning books, however, J. K. Rowling has definitely pulled it off. Despite the entire world having very high expectations of this movie, she certainly proved to us that her creative, magical side will never die down. It is safe to say that J. K. Rowling and David Yates make an exceptional team.
I personally feel like beside the movie being a tad bit longer than expected and the slightly dragged opening scene of the movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was very involving and I would definitely watch it again!
I rate it 4/5 stars.
